What's in a Name?

Hou's it gaun?
Many of you have asked me in the past how we arrived at the street names for Stonebridge Glen. First I will tell you that Carstairs got it's name after the river that once flowed west of town was named for a Lt. Col Carstairs of the RNWMP who had been stationed here in 1885. The town was subsequently named after the river. Carstairs is a small town in Scotland which is a suburb of Glasgow. I had the fortunate opportunity to visit the town a few years ago and learned that the name originates from castel tarres: 'The Castle of Tarres'.
Residents of Skara Brae Close and Stenness Circle; You may have wondered at some point as to the origin and relevance of these names. Shortly after a trek through northern Scotland, I was given the opportunity to develop names for our new subdivision. The names needed to reflect the Subdivision name, Stonebridge Glen. After some discussion we wanted each name to represent stone structures that have stood the test of time, and also reflect the Scottish heritage of Carstairs. Therefore, the cul-de-sacs were named after two archaeological sites in the Orkney Islands, just off the north coast of Scotland.
Skara Brae still stands as the best-preserved group of Stone Age houses in Western Europe. The houses contain stone furniture, hearths doorways, bed enclosures and drains. The Standing Stones of Stenness form a ring 44 meters in diameter and stand about 19 feet high. The construction dates to around 3000 BC. It is thought that the stones were used to estimate the timing of seasons, or as a meeting place for commerce. For more information about these sites visit: www.orkneyjar.com/history. Stenlea, roughly translated from Gaelic means: Stone Meadow, and Stromsay is a derivation on Stronsay (Stronsay Island) - Strom is also a Gaelic derivation of 'Stone'.
See ye efter!

Fire Prevention Week
Tuesday, October 05, 2010
|
This week is fire prevention week. The Fire departments are asking all home owners or renters to check their smoke detectors. It is a good idea to check them on a regular basis and replace any 9 volt batteries twice a year. The Fire Commissioner's office is also urging residents to devise a home escape plan and practice it. You can find more information on home fire safety at http://www.calgary.ca/fire
Gold Seal Homes was pleased to be a part of the Calgary Fire Department's annual smoke detector blitz in the Marlboro area of Calgary on Monday night. For a link to the story follow:
